For the past decade or longer, hotels have been exploring various ways to “go green” with smarter choices about the products and services made available to their guests. Recent efforts include reducing daily laundry, removal of small shampoo bottles, smart controls for HVAC systems, and more.  Now many are converting their keycards to environmentally friendly keycards made from various natural woods, including Birch, Bamboo and other common sustainable trees.

An estimated 30 billion plastic cards are produced every year—that’s 150,000 tons of plastic. Using cards made from wood can reduce the carbon footprint by 50%. So far, hotel brands such as Radisson Blu, Westin, Four Seasons, Accor, and Kempinski—plus retailers like Starbucks and Whole Foods (which use them as gift cards)—have signed on.

Standard Plastic, Inc. has added wooden RFID smart cards to our line of products. Standard Plastic Co-Owner, Ryan Mitchell, offers, “We have noticed a significant increase in requests for wood cards, particularly from our West Coast customers. We have already filled several orders, with more pending.”

The cards are wood on the front and back with a small RFID chip embedded inside, so 98% of the card is biodegradable, unlike standard cards printed on PVC. The wood cards can be printed or laser engraved, or both. They can be made to be compatible with most RFID lock systems. Earth friendly and works like traditional plastic cards but they are 100% PVC free. Wooden RFID cards are durable, reusable, and recyclable. Our wooden cards are FSC certified, meaning that the source of the wood is environmentally friendly. Available woods currently include Bamboo, Beech, Sapele, and Walnut. They are also available in custom sizes and shapes!
